“Cimento” is a traditional sea bath that typically takes place during January. It’s a kind of propitiatory ritual, a good luck tradition, a “cleansing” from the negative aspects of the ending year.
This test of courage is a very ancient practice that has always been considered highly beneficial for the body. It is believed that winter baths in the freezing sea waters are the best prevention for all seasonal winter illnesses, from strengthening the immune system to preventing many cold-weather ailments.
There is no age limit – from the youngest to the eldest, it’s suitable for everyone. Diving into the frozen waves between December and January is a courageous and energizing act for anyone.
Just as it has been happening for a long time in Nordic countries, in Liguria too, the tradition of winter sea bathing is deeply rooted throughout the territory. In recent years, many coastal towns have included the “Winter Cimento” in their Christmas events calendar, which, along with related activities, attracts not only brave swimmers but also curious onlookers and local specialty enthusiasts.
Wellness, fun, and playfulness – after each Cimento, there’s always a regenerating banquet dedicated to participants and others, to celebrate the event together.
As every year, the two winter Cimenti in the province of La Spezia will take place in Levanto on January 1st and in San Terenzo (Lerici) on January 6th.
While staying at Downtown Blue Apartment, you can easily reach both locations and watch or participate in this event that has become an unmissable appointment.
Happy New Year!
