Lerici’s Brief History
Already a Greek and Phoenician port, Lerici was affected by Etruscan and Roman settlements, in conflict with the Ligurians. The first mention of Lerici dates back to the 8th century, when the ancient church of Santa Marta was destroyed by Saracen pirates. Over the centuries, Lerici was first conquered by the Pisans, who fortified its castle and village, and subsequently by the Genoese. The village continued to have no peace and suffered French domination from 1396 to 1491, as well as rule by Florence, the Aragonese, and the Visconti of Milan.
From 1479, Lerici returned under Genoa, which completed the castle in its current form. In the 16th century, Andrea Doria made the decision in Lerici to switch from France to Spain, removing France’s dominion over the Mediterranean.
