These elegant buildings are in the Art Nouveau style, such as Palazzo Boletto and Palazzo Contesso. The imposing and solemn Post Office Building, completed in 1933, with its clock tower, has become an icon of the city. In addition to the historic buildings, Piazza Verdi has been at the center of a complicated and debated redevelopment project aimed at restoring value to a symbolic place, not only for the city of Liguria but also for an important historical period for all of Italy. The renovation was entrusted to the Florentine architect Giannantonio Vannetti and the French artist Daniel Buren, ensuring that the architectural functionality of the square was complemented by artistic sensitivity. The project received both applause and criticism; however, it certainly involved a challenging historical interpretation to avoid concealing the cultural soul of the square while simultaneously projecting its new social function towards the future.
New steps and a slightly lower amphitheater were built to provide a meeting place for events, shows, and concerts. Water basins were also added to bring more light to the square and offer some refreshment during hot summer days. These spaces evoke the sea, which has always been an integral part of the maritime city of La Spezia. The colorful glass public art installations are visually striking, encouraging tourists and residents to explore and discover this square.
